The diagram above explains visually how each of the sizes in the A Series are created. Since then they have progressively spread across the globe. A Paper Sizes have been the formal standard in Europe since the mid 20th century. Some South American countries still use the US/ Canadian ‘Letter Size’ benchmark, but it is gradually being fazed out. Only the United States and Canada are not signed up to the A Series as a standard. The A Paper Series is now recognised worldwide. All measurements are rounded to the nearest millimeter. For example, A5 is half the size of A4, A6 is half the size of A5 etc.

All smaller paper sizes thereafter, A(x) are created by A(x-1) halved parallel to its shorter sides. A0, the Series‘ largest sheet has an area of 1m2. The width of each sheet is determined by dividing the height by 1.4142.
